Mini Update – The Parts Are In!

Today I picked up the parts and tools necessary to complete this project. Unfortunately I have some responsibilities to handle this weekend, so this will just be an overview of what I have received. It is kind of redundant when compared to the previous post, except there’s pictures!

Asus Poseidon GTX 980 Platinum
Intel i7-5930k
3x120mm Thermaltake Ring Orange LED Fans
10 pack Rigid Revolver Compression Fittings Straight Knurled – Anodized Black
FrozenQ 400mm Black Helix Reservior
Mayhem Biltz Pro Cleaning System, Silver Coil and Biocide Extreme
PrimoChill Base High Purity Deionized Water UV Active Orange Coolant
12 Pack PrimoChill 24″ Rigid Acrylic Tubing
4 pack PrimoChill 36″ Rigid PETG Tubing
Hardware Labs Black Ice SR2 Multiport Black Carbon Radiotor
Monsoon Hardline All Pro Deluxe Bender Kit w/ Heatgun

Beginning the Expansion

With my initial build, I’ve always intended to expand my Closed Loop system to an Open Loop.

Closed Loop being an All in one CPU water cooler.

Open Loop being a customized water cooling system with the ability to expand, drain and clean the system.

Because of this I had picked up a Cooler Master Glacer 240L. Mostly because it had the exact pump/CPU block that I was already shopping for, but for less money and included a 240mm radiator. This tided  me over until I managed the funds to expand.

The base system (view previous build log for more detail) is as follows:

Coolermaster HAF Stacker, custom painted by Redmax of (Orange and black)

Gigabyte X99-SOC-Champion Motherboard

i7-5930K Intel Processor

4x4GB G.Skill Ripjaws4 Black 3000mhz DDR4 Memory

Asus Poseidon GTX 980 Platinum Video Card

240GB Mushkin Eco2 SSD (Primary SSD for OS and programs)

3TB Toshiba HDD (Music and Media storage0

2x 480GB Sandisk Ultra 2 SSDs (Game storage)

The items that I haven’t previously been able to add didn’t just include expansion on the watercooling, but also a second GTX 980. This has now been ordered as well.

So far the system has been okay, especially performance-wise, but I have been having either processor or motherboard issues. I have just received my third chip and it will be newly installed with this upgrade. It may be a motherboard related issue, as I noticed a discoloration on a section of LGA (Landing Grid Array, where the processor sits) pins. I have decided I will use a toothbrush and fast evaporating cleaning liquid to softly brush these pins to restore them to match the rest of the array.

I have decided to go with hard line or rigid piping to carry the water cooling fluid. I intend to use an Ultraviolet active Orange fluid.

Based on my much more experience friend, Redmax, I have decided to place my Water cooling purchase through I also selected them because they aren’t too far from me, saving me the costs of shipping for a couple of hours of driving.

For now, I have ordered all of the necessary parts. Below is the listing of the parts that will be used and some insight as to why I made my choices.

FrozenQ LF Reaction 400mm Reservoir – Black Helix

Initially I was considering the FrozenQ Limited Edition Reactor Reservoir, but the black was out of stock. I then looked at the Helix line, I was impressed with the effect. The coolant flows up through the helix and spills from the top, providing a bubbling/fountain effect. In addition it includes a cathode (ultraviolet) light, to bring out the color in the coolant.

Hardware Labs Black Ice SR2 Multiport Black Carbon Radiator – 360mm

In this case, I was considering the Black Ice SR1, mostly because it is on sale and partly because I have faith in the brand. As I researched it, I realized that the SR2 had supremely better performance and this version has several ports. The extra ports enable the ability to bleed, fill and drain the system from the radiator.

Monsoon Hardline All Pro Deluxe Bender Kit 3/8 x 1/2 (13mm)

with Heatgun

With the Bender Kit, I realized that i didn’t own a lot of the items necessary to shape the tubing. With this kit, I get all of the necessary tools and a handy case in which to carry them.

PrimoChill 1/2in Rigid PETG Tubing – 36in – Clear (4 Pack)

While researching hard line, I discovered that using PrimoChill Fittings will eliminate a lot of the adjustments that will need to be made to the tubing in order to help it fit in the fitting without damaging the tubing or the seal of the fittings. With this in mind I went with PrimoChill for all of the tubing and fittings. In addition, I went with a lot of tubing, to give myself the opportunity to screw up and possibly have some left over for other people’s systems in future projects.

PrimoChill 1/2in Rigid Acrylic Tubing – 24in – Clear (12 Pack)

Rigid Revolver Compression Fitting 3/8″ x 1/2″ Straight Knurled 10 Pack – Anodized Black

I was initially looking at “regular” Rigid Compression fittings. As I looked closer I realized that these “Revolvers” look much sweeter. I then checked a few reviews and discovered that they are even friendlier for the Tubing itself and easier for install. Sold!

Mayhems Biocide Extreme

A Biocide is necessary to keep algae and other living things from spawning in the water cooling system. This kit covered all of the bases and includes Ph testing, which makes it even easier.

Mayhems Silver Coil 99.999 Pure Fine Silver

This is probably overkill, but silver is a natural aglaecide/antibiotic. By inserting these coils in the tubing it will help further protect the system from any kind of living thing moving in and prohibiting cooling or clouding the looks of the coolant.

Mayhems Blitz Pro Cleaning System

Did I say overkill? Well, I have to make sure the CPU waterblock is clean and at some point I will have to change out the coolant, so maybe this is just thinking ahead.

PrimoChill Base High Purity Deionized Water – 32oz – Brite Orange

This is premixed, UV active coolant. I picked up 2L to cover the system and be sure I have enough.

Thermaltake Ring 12 High Static Pressure LED Radiator Fan – Orange

I  picked up 3 fans. Sure I already have fans, but not Orange LED fans. According to the reviews, this particular radiator is great in a push only configuration, so I’m not going to go with a 6 fan push/pull set up.

The parts will be ready for pick up on Monday, so I’ll probably run to Palm Bay on Tuesday and get this stuff together. Then the fun begins! With pictures!

Every night in lying down
Wondering what to regret
Did I ask too much?
Was I there too little?
I want to say, I have a full life
But how much is true?

Every day I wake up
Wondering how to move
Do I reach out?
Do I give in?
I want to stay, I can sleep in
But I have so much to do

All the time lying around
Wondering when to quit
Should I play a game?
Should I pick a role?
I want to stray, I can give in
But none of it’s true

Synopsis –

A man who died in a civil war battle Awakens 3 days later. He is now cursed Immortal. Everytime he dies he reawakens 3 days later on the battlefield(maybe? Or maybe at place of death, though this could get complicated if he were to die in prison, at the result of the death penalty or some other spot. Then again it could be entertaining to have him awaken in a drug den after a successful od or some such). Each death leaves a scar and memories of 3 beings speaking to him. With each death the memories become clearer. His existence extends in definately. Each story arc is in a different time period (civil war, 40s, 70s, far flung future). The beings control many of his actions, placing him in circumstances to wipe out his family line and other people the beings deem as threats.

A civil war era battlefield. Cannons firing, men and horses dying. Show main character on horse, Sabre drawn slashing at men. He is a Confederate officer. The horse is Slain. The officer keeps fighting until shot down.

First person view of a dawn sky. A Confederate Civil War soldier awakens on a battlefield. He remembers dying, but still his eyes open to a new dawn. Sitting up,  he sees the forested horizon. Looking down he sees that He has multiple holes in his shirt and pants. He appears to have no mark on his skin. He awakens with One memory. Seared into his mind is the image of his family’s plantation burning and screams chorusing from within. (imagery of plantation burning at night)
View of woods then fields, plants and trees go from green forest to green fields to burned fields to He returns home to find the ruins of his home, slaves, family and friends lie dead among the fields and lawn. Some are shot, others cut down with swords. The only building left standing is the slaves’ quarters. He enters and finds slaughter. In his despair he gathers a length of chain and hangs himself within the building.

It is not a good hanging. He does not successfully break his neck, ending the pain. Instead he lingers, kicking as his life drains from him. His gasps turn to chokes, his neck constricts and eventually the darkness overwhelms him. End first issue.

Again he awakens. There is no memorial for the last three days (difficult to Demonstrate time passing in this time period. Maybe show a leaf rotting from freshly fallen and leave time passed up to interpretation)

Another dawn, this time he awakens on the floor of the slaves’ quarters, the looped chain dangling above his head. He cannot believe what is happening. There seems to be no end. He decides he needs to leave this place and bury his sadness within the labors of war. He has vague recollections of a group of mysterious, hooded beings speaking to him, but he cannot remember what they said. He can only recall flashes of images appearing.  This time with some grasp of the hooded beings speaking to him. A statement of their intent to see his entire bloodline wiped from the Earth, but that they are not through with him…

Traveling north, he stumbles across a squad of Union soldiers. Unarmed, yet still dressed in his Confederate grays, he attempts to flee. They shoot him down, one lucky shot striking him in the back of the head, sending his brains along the path on which he’d hoped to escape.

Yet again, he awakens to the blazing sun. This time he stays still and appraises his situation. No family, lost in the woods, wearing clothes riddles with bullet holes. None of it makes sense. Yet, the image of the hooded figures is stronger than ever. He sees only darkness, their blue hoods and their glowing, red eyes. He clearly remembers five of them, speaking in a cacophonous voice:

You are the last of your line, but we will keep you alive, for purpose you. will not be able to die we will not let you if you do find ways to cause terminal damage to your body you will come back and you will still be ours. you have owned people before, but now you are the owned. this will not be the last time you see us and we will keep an eye on you.

Reincarnation brings him back in an intact, not immediately dying state. With one breath. In same position in reality unless it is immediately deadly. For example, when hanging himself his body dies and rapidly decomposes, then reforms over 3 days. Only suicides leave scars.

Extreme future nightmare scenario. Trapped in space in a space suit with no air. In space there would be no immediately better save place, so he lives and dies on one breath.

Ideas for later dialogue, maybe not even for this story:

“Oh, I believe we owe her a new husband, or boyfriend or George Clooney or something ”

” and here I was thinking we were going light on Secret Santa this year “

Truth in advertwhining

Every interaction with everyone is new relation
Start from scratch or stretched for years
We don’t all make sense
We all project our worries on each other
Casting out our own fears
In a net to catch our nightmares
Don’t try to tell me it’s just the other person
My tail can only be commented about
Just. So. Many. Times.
Before the smoke indicates it’s on fire
You say I’m not dumb
Or at least not to be so sad about it
It’s just too easy for me to fuck it up
Make that choice
Which breaks the light
“It’s not my fault”
“It’s not my fault”
“I didn’t meeeeaaaan it”
I’m so scared of being alone that I cast my fear net out to catch all the emptiness I can find
Anything meaningful I manage to snag, I throw back every time

And it Begins…

While waiting for the primary parts, I figured it was time to tear the case down and see what can be done with it. I intend to go with no optical drives. I reached the point with the tear down that I was able to get rid of almost all of the drive cages. I also discovered an SSD socket on the back of the motherboard plate.

These are the parts that I’ll install for this round.

eVGA SuperNOVA g2 850W Power Supply

Power supplies seem to always come in bags. It really seems like the manufacturers expect us to carry these around. I can see the party now, “Hey do you have a power supply?” “Well as a matter of fact I do and look at this great bag!”

It also came with a bag to carry any extra cables and accessories.

Being a fully modular power supply, installation becomes so easy. That and you get enough cables to make it rain.

Here’s how the Power Supply installs, when using the upper portion of the case.

This is how it looks from behind. If you look at the bottom of the picture, you can see the chrome black plate that covers the i/o panel for the upper portion of the case.

On the lower portion of the case, I’ve installed the back plate for the Power Supply hole

For the SSD, I’ve gone with my second Mushkin. The first one has been running for 5+ years without a hitch.

While I can’t do anything with the RAM yet, here’s pictures of it anyways. I love the looks of these sticks.

The cooler I’ve run with is the Glacer 240L v2. The best benefit being that it is expandable, without voiding the warranty.

One item that will be adjusted is the Radiator. A first minor gripe will be the fin count in the radiator. As you can see here, there is lots of space between these fins. The good being is that the fan being used doesn’t have to be “high static”, but the overall cooling capabilities are usually less.

Now to tear down the case. I discovered a few interesting things.

Like, 2 more spots for fan placement!

Lots of hard drive cages in the way for the air flow…oh wait, those can go away

Oh wait, everything is removable and there appears to be an 80mm fan here! Not a fan of this thought, it’d make a lot more sense for it to be a 120mm fan…

If you look closely, you’ll see that the front panel has been reoved. After some fiddling, I was able to install it on the top portion of the case.

Oh look, fans!

By this point, I’ve discovered the SSD slot on the back of the motherboard tray. So let’s put an SSD there!

Now I get to put the water cooling radiator

I’ve screwed it into the side-wall of the top portion of the case and begun to run the cables for the Power Supply.

Time to…pull out more drive cages!

This is starting to get roomy. Let’s see what we are looking at downstairs.

Finally, if I didn’t have a hard drive cage collection before, I definitely do now!

The next update will be the installation of all the PHUN stuff!

Build Preview ‘Orange & Black Attack Stack’

The name is pending, but I figured to start with a list of parts going into this rig:

  1. I won a custom painted HAF 935 from my friends at This is an extremely customizable and expandable case. To start I’m placing a majority of the components into the Mid-Tower HAF 945 portion. The water-cooling and PSU will go in the mini-ITX 915F portion. Later I may expand with a 915R to add a removable Steam Box, so I can stream games from the main PC into any room on my network. The timing of receiving this case placed me in a position to enter into an Overclocking Competition on, though the delay in my funding being received may’ve delayed my build too long to actually win.
  2. For cooling, I was shopping for a Swiftech H220 to start a custom cooling loop. Well, it was going to be $150 for just that pump, once I added in a radiator I was already up to $350. Then I saw a deal on the CoolerMaster Clacer 240L. While the radiator is only 120×2, when I was aiming for 120×3, I realized it has the Swiftech H220 for a pump! Plus, the deal meant it was $100 for all the parts and it is all expandable, so I can still customize it, down the road. Including changing out the radiator, tubing and expanding it to include other parts.
  3. Initially I thought I had a Power Supply in place. Especially after Seasonic said that it worked fine. Yet, while it was at Seasonic my current rig started working fine, not showing the issues that were there when the Seasonic PSU was installed. So, I had to purchase a new Power Supply. After combing through deals and reviews, I landed on the eVGA Supernova 850 G2. While it’s not 80+ platinum like the Seasonic unit was, it posts figures comparable and it appears to actually be more efficient than the 80+ Gold rating requires.
  4. I’ve used Crucial and Mushkin SSDs. Recently Mushkin released an exclusive line via NewEgg. I looked over the specs and I’m more than satisfied with the idea of using this ECO2 line. Initially I will be overclocking and testing with this rig, so capacity isn’t an issue.
  5. Once I went down the line of using this case, I committed to a primarily orange and black color combo. When it comes to orange and black motherboards, you are pretty well set on a Gigabyte SOC board. This worked out in a few directions. First off, the competition I was interested in entering requires a Gigabyte board. Secondly, I was pretty set on going with the x99 chipset. Finally, they were releasing a new board the SOC Champion. The few drawbacks of this board are that it “only” has 4 RAM slots, “limiting” it to 64GB DDR4, rather than 128GB. It doesn’t have dual NIC. The m.2 socket is “limited” to 20 GB/s. These drawbacks result in higher memory performance due to less line tracing for the additional RAM slots, more CPU cycles due to handling only one NIC and less of the PCI-e bus being taken up by the m.2. Plus, I love the looks and performance of this board.
  6. For the processor, I’d debated between the 5820k and 5930k. The 5960x being far beyond my needs or budget. I settled on the 5930k, so that I could take advantage of 16x speeds in SLI, which maybe in my future.
  7. The last two items took the most research and work, the video card and the memory. On the video card part, I already have a GTX 680, which plays fine on my 1920×1200 resolution display. Though it doesn’t do so well on more demanding games on my 2560×1600 resolution display. This is mostly due to only having 2GB of on-board memory. While researching, I discovered the ASUS Platinum Poseidon gtx980. It’s pricing is about the same as buying a GTX980 and adding a water cooling block, while not adding the risk of voiding the warranty. Plus it has air-cooling, so if I am not completely ready to add it to the water-loop, I can run it without worries.
  8. Finally, there’s the memory. This was a tough one, memory support by motherboard manufacturers has been spotty at best. I was leaning towards a 3000mhz kit, but the design, overclocking and MOD monitoring of the Crucial Ballstix Elite Memory won me over.

I am the Goilem
I wait for your command
You take me and you leave me
As only you can

Crush the gem
Burn the scroll smash your mirror

Living your life
As free as a bird
Casting your bidding
Into the visage of your mirror

I am a cyclops
The emerald in my forehead
Casting its pale light
Guiding my way

Crush the gem
Burn the scroll smash your mirror

You mold me with your will
Shape me as only you do
The mouldy scroll
Giving me life

Crush the gem
Burn the scroll smash your mirror

Living my life
As dumb as a rock
Wrapped in clay
Soaked in mud

Crush the gem
Burn the scroll smash your mirror

I am the Goilem
Crawling back to you
Drying clay crumbling
Each step an act of surrender

Lingering spirits

There’s a picture of 3 ghosts beside my bed,
A mother, a daughter and a dad,
They look like nice people,
So happy and alive,
I can almost place their names,
It’s all right there in my head,
But maybe I’m wrong,
I often am.

I think i knew them once,
Lives spreading out before them,
All the doors were open,
All the lights were green,
Always smiling,
Never dying.

There’s a picture of two ghosts beside my bed,
I think of them every day,
A man and woman leaning together on a concrete bench,
Surrounded by nature and beauty,
Backs to the camera,
I remember them happy,
But maybe I’m wrong,
I often am.

I think i knew you once, perhaps it’s just a dream,
Future memories of holding elderly hands,
Walking through the store,
Guiding through doors,
Shuffling on floors,
Always smiling.
